Messum's has specialised in marine painting for over 35 years, but a passion for boats and all things maritime runs in the history of the Messum family. In 1838 forebears of the current chairman founded the distinguished boat-building firm of E. Messum and Sons on the banks of the Thames at Richmond. As a keen sailor, David Messum owns the well-known classic American-designed sloop, Josephine.
Since the first exhibition they dedicated to Marine art over 30 years ago, Messum's have continued to celebrate the importance of the sea in the British psyche, its place as a vehicle for a variety of emotions and sentiments, and its continuing significance as a source of artistic inspiration for British artists right up to the present day.
The Call of the Running Tide, so often the title chosen for these exhibitions, well describes the emotive pull of the sea on sailors, as well as artists and collectors, and comes from the aptly-titled poem Sea-fever by John Masefield.
