messums DIRECTOR'S CHOICE 12/05/2008

Buying art is ultimately a personal decision, but expert advice can be an invaluable aid.

Our directors have unique knowledge and specialist interests in the Fine Arts which collectively add up to 120 years of experience. They may be approached on all aspects of the Fine Art business with particular regard to British painting.

We hope that you will find their advice to be of interest and of value. Here are some of their personal suggestions:

  Richard Eurich (1903-1992)
Rain over the Island
oil on board, 56 x 102 cm ( 22 x 40 in )
£28,500

My choice would be for the Richard Eurich, No 48 in our the exhibition “Camden Town to St Ives”. He is one of the great English landscape painters of the last century, catching the mood of our coast line uniquely in the spirit of its age. He has undergone recent reappraisal and is likely to be a good investment for the future. David Messum Chairman

  Arthur John Trevor Briscoe (1873-1943)
Decks Awash
oil on canvas, 90 x 71 cm ( 35 1/2 x 28 in )
£68,500

I have loved this painting since I first saw it, and I am fortunate that I see it every day at present as it currently hangs above my desk - but obviously not for long! I do wish I could take it home. The subtle palette of soft greys and greens – the vigorous power of brushstrokes depicting wind and wave is awe inspiring (particularly to anyone who is keen on sailing) Carol Tee - Managing Director
